PALS

-Parents As Literacy Supporters-

(Anderson & Morrison, 1999)

- Sample Sessions -

Typically, ten sessions begin at the end of October and continue until early June (some locations are on a different timeline). Each session is about two and one-half hours long.

The session usually begins with participants and facilitators sharing food.

The topic of the session is then introduced and parents share their knowledge and insights about the topic.

The following sessions are suggestions. Communities are encouraged to design their own sessions to meet the needs of their families/caregivers.

Parents and caregivers then proceed to the kindergarten or early childhood setting where they work with the children for about an hour on activities related to the topic of the day.

While the children are having snack or at recess, parents and caregivers are provided with an opportunity to discuss what they observed as they worked with the children.

At the end of the session, parents, caregivers and children are presented with a high quality children's book and other literacy materials to use at home.
