In this activity, students will practice aspirating the consonants [p], [k], [t], [q], and [h] at the beginning of a sentence, by dangling a piece of toilet or crepe paper in front of their mouths. Students who correctly aspirate their words should be able to blow or move the paper.

Materials:

Instructions:

1. Distribute strips of paper to each student.

2. Each student completes the worksheet.

  • Counting the number of times their partner aspirates during the given phrase
  • Timing how long it takes to complete the given phrase.

3. As students practice, the number of aspirations should increase, and their times decrease. Students should be cautioned to practice their pronunciation, not their ability to speed read.
