Cultural Recognition Activity
Task: (A)
To create a product (power point presentation, poster, webpage,
pamphlet, etc) that represents a cultural holiday that is celebrated in your
own culture.
(B) To give an oral presentation based on the
Cultural Holiday “Product.”
Objective: (Students
will be able to…_)
- share
cultural heritage while going through the writing process and oral
presentation process.
- Write
with fluency – approaching that of a native English speaker
- Speak
with fluency – approaching that of a native English speaker
Lesson Plan:
- Allow
students to choose a cultural holiday.
It is best if each student or pair chooses a different
holiday.
- Allow
students to do the research for their cultural holiday. (PRE-WRITING)
Criteria:
- Who
celebrates this holiday?
- What
does this holiday celebrate?
- When
is this holiday celebrated?
- How
is this holiday celebrated?
(foods, traditions, customs, decorations, etc.)
- Are
there any similarities to other cultural holidays?
- What
is your experience celebrating this holiday?
- Once
the research is complete, students should choose the type of product they
would like to share with the class.
Giving the students options for product allows them to feel that
they have “control” over their presentation. It also allows students to be creative.
- Give
students time to complete a Draft of their product (WRITING)
- Allow
the students to share their product with peers and the teacher. (PEER-EDITING)
- Once
students have received feedback from the teacher their peers, they should
go back and edit their work.
(EDITING)
- Students
now need to publish their work.
The publishing process is dependent on the type of product. (PUBLISHING)
- Presentations: Allows students to present their
work!
